The Convention People’s Party (CPP) flag bearer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom has accused the Government of not being committed to the promotion of Made in Ghana goods and foods.
He said also that government was not doing much to support its own people, citing the award of big contracts to foreign contractors instead of helping to build the capacity of local firms to match up to the big international construction firms.
Dr. Nduom, also known as Edwumawura, said these when he officially inaugurated one of the party's campaign machineries, “Ward 20/20”, at Sandema in the Builsa North constituency as part of efforts to unseat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Agnes Asangalisa Chigabatia.
The Builsa North and Navrongo Central seats are the only two seats the NPP has out of the 13 parliamentary seats in the Upper East Region and it would therefore take the CPP or any other party serious efforts to snatch them, due to the seriousness the NPP attaches to those seats.
Against this backdrop, the Edwumawura has urged all party activists to remain steadfast and spread the new message and image of the CPP in all corners of the constituency.
The ceremony also afforded the party the opportunity to register new members.
Members of the Ward 20/20 comprise 20 polling station executives each from all the 64 polling stations in the constituencies, all of whom have been tasked to spearhead the CPP campaign in their areas to ensure victory come December 2008.
As his usual message, Dr. Nduom promised to create more jobs and other development opportunities in every part of the country, especially Northern Ghana, to further reduce the rural-urban migration, which could become a very big hindrance to the development of rural areas.
“It will not take a miracle, but a political will and commitment to improve upon the living standards in the country.
There are very common job creation opportunities and avenues in every part of this country, but our leaders, over the years, have failed to see and to use them. I will use them if given the opportunity.”
Citing the Zuarungu Meat Factory as his usual example, Dr. Nduom said the factory had deteriorated largely due to neglect but was currently not beyond repairs and restoration.
“It will take a few millions of cedis to rehabilitate that factory to create real jobs for the youth and market for cattle rearers in the area and the entire Upper East region.
I have worked in a meat factory in America before, so I know that any money pumped into that area will not go waste.”
Dr. Nduom maintained that a CPP government would ensure that the constitutional provision that allows Members of Parliament to also serve as Ministers of State would be abolished through a constitutional process at all cost, to ensure that Members of Parliament and Ministers of State do their work effectively devoid of huge workload.
The CPP flagbearer used the occasion to introduce Dominic Asukuubisa as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Builsa North Constituency for the December polls.
Mr. Asukuubisa, until his now, had been the Assembly member for the Chiok Electoral Area for the past eight years.
The CPP Parliamentary Candidate appealed to all CPP members to go out into the hinterlands to canvass for votes for the party and make it attractive to the people.
He however declined to make promises, possibly due to his knowledge of what happens after one gets to power.
